The Sacrament of Confirmation

When a child receives the Sacrament of Confirmation, a sponsor is appointed. The role of the sponsor is to be a role model throughout the child’s life.

The age group is between 10-13 years therefore a more mature gown is usually worn. We suggest the ‘Tarah’, ‘Julia’ or ‘Rebecca’ or ‘Amelia’ gowns for their elegance, style and maturity. While there is no "required" colour for Confirmations, white is the usual choice, but ivory or light pastels can be worn.

Veil

A veil, either long or short, is more in keeping with the European traditional style. Modern Confirmations do not require a veil. The choice is yours.

Headpiece

Headpieces such as headbands, bows and tiaras (with or without veils) are popular. A hairpin clip adorned with crystals or pearls, or a jewelled tiara with small crystals are also popular choices. Petite hair combs in matching colours or even a solid flower shaped crystal hair pin can also be worn.

Shoes

Shoes should complement the gown. The usual choice is a classically simple and elegant leather low-heel slip-on. As with the gown, shoes should be chosen with comfort in mind - young ladies need to be at ease with all aspects of their outfit.

Makeup And Nails

Neutral make-up with a touch more applied than normal, but not over done. Nails are best kept to a minimum - lightly filed and a pale colour applied, or just a clear lacquer for shine.

Hair

If wearing a veil or tiara then a French bun or similar is suitable. If wearing clips or combs, natural flowing locks would work perfectly.

Jewellery

A fine choker or necklace and matching gold or silver bracelet. A cross is also traditionally worn - usually as a gift from the child’s sponsor - and can be on a gold chain around the neck or the wrist, or as in the European tradition, pinned to the gown.

Accessories

Accessories are usually limited to white or ivory satin stretch gloves, tights or stockings in ivory, white or neutral, and a tote bag or small purse. A candle is also carried as part of the ceremony.

Dress Care

Some simple storage and handling advice for your confirmation gown:

  • Always dry-clean the gown
  • Wash your hands before handling the gown.
  • When packing the gown in a box or chest, pack with acid free tissue paper.
  • Keep the box stored out of direct sunlight and away from moisture, and away from household fumes and pollutants.
  • Store the box where vermin and insects can not get to it.
  • Ensure there is adequate air circulation around the box to prevent mustiness.
  • To hang the gown, use a material coated hanger and place the gown in a sealed garment bag.
