First Holy Communion
The word ‘Communion’ means to unite with. First Holy Communion is the sacrament of a special bond with Jesus Christ usually between the ages of 6-8 years of age. The Communion gown is part of the child’s special day.
The First Holy Communion is a celebration in the girl's life that she will share with family and friends, therefore she is to outshine everyone else. We suggest elegant and petite styles such as the ‘Kristin’, ‘Abbey’ and ‘Melissa’ gowns, in white or ivory as tradition dictates.
These ‘heirloom’ quality gowns can also be passed down from mother to daughter.
Veil
Communion veils are very much like that of a bride, but on a smaller scale. They can range from simple and short to ornate and long. They can be plain or with a satin edging. The veils should match the gown.
Headpiece
Headpieces such as headbands, bows and tiaras (with or without veils) are popular. A plain yet petite tiara worn as a hair band, a floral stretchy ponytail band with a floral decoration in white or ivory, or a decorative comb with crystals or pearls would also suffice.
Shoes
Shoes should complement the gown. Ivory silk or white satin ballet "streetwear" style shoes with a rubber sole would be perfect. If a more elegant shoe is required a classic simple white leather shoe would be perfect. Tights or stockings, in ivory, white or neutral are also to be worn.
Makeup
A neutral look - minimal makeup with a little lip gloss and mascara that is just enough to highlight her prettiness.
Hair
If choosing a veil or tiara then a bun would be suitable. If choosing clips, tiaras or even head bands a natural free flowing look would be appropriate.
Nails
Nails are best kept to a minimum. To be filed and just a clear lacquer coat for shine.
Jewellery
First Holy Communion tradition requires a rosary to be carried - either in the child’s hands or purse. Many selections of Rosary beads are available. A simple gold or silver choker or necklace and matching bracelet can be worn.
Accessories
Accessories are usually limited to long or short white satin gloves, lace tights or socks in ivory or white, and a tote bag, white purse or a pretty white bag with a bow matching the gown.
Dress Care
Some simple storage and handling advice for your communion gown:
- Always dry-clean the gown
- Wash your hands before handling the gown.
- When packing the gown in a box or chest, pack with acid free tissue paper.
- Keep the box stored out of direct sunlight and away from moisture, and away from household fumes and pollutants.
- Store the box where vermin and insects can not get to it.
- Ensure there is adequate air circulation around the box to prevent mustiness.
- To hang the gown, use a material coated hanger and place the gown in a sealed garment bag.
